Bangalore Has 600+ Dark Stores, and Some Are Closing. What It Means for Grocery Leases

Quick answer: Bengaluru has about 630 quick commerce dark stores, more than any Indian city, and Q3 2026 was the first quarter where platforms shut zones in large numbers. As of 27 October 2026, Lokazen counts 1,304 active grocery and supermarket outlets plus 735 pharmacies in Bangalore. Overlap, not absence, now decides which grocery leases hold up.

How many dark stores does Bangalore have in 2026?

Roughly 630, depending on how you count. QuickCommerceMap's July 2026 survey found 629 dark stores across five apps: Blinkit 165, Zepto 159, Swiggy Instamart 116, BigBasket 95 and Flipkart Minutes 94 (QuickCommerceMap, July 2026). A separate Q3 tracker counted 631 serviceable Bengaluru zones on 30 September, up 27 on the quarter (Food Data Scrape Q3 2026 tracker). CLSA's August counts put Blinkit at 180, Zepto 177, Instamart 143 and Flipkart Minutes 119 (ETRetail, Aug 2026).

• No platform dominates. The top two are within one point of each other on share.
• Closures have started. The Q3 tracker logged 96 zones going dark nationally, nearly triple the 34 in Q2, mostly where three or more apps already overlapped.
• Small-format grocery is still opening. Lulu Daily opened its 17th store at Divinity Mall in Bengaluru on 22 October 2026 (India Retailing, 22 Oct 2026).

How many grocery stores and pharmacies does Bangalore have?

Lokazen's census counts 1,304 active grocery-led outlets: 1,048 grocery stores and 252 supermarkets, run by 745 brands and independents. Add 735 pharmacies and the daily-needs base is 2,039 storefronts. Only 19 grocery outlets and 1 pharmacy sit inside malls, so this is almost entirely a high-street and neighbourhood format.

Where is grocery retail concentrated in Bangalore?

South Bangalore holds 386 grocery outlets, 41.2% of the zone-tagged total, more than North and East combined (373). Central is thinnest at 77, which fits its older, mixed-use building stock.

Are dark stores crowding out neighbourhood grocery stores?

In the busiest pockets, they sit side by side. The table compares the dark stores QuickCommerceMap mapped in July 2026 with Lokazen's own grocery and pharmacy counts in the same localities.

HSR Layout is the most contested grocery pocket in the city: 13 dark stores across all five apps, plus 40 grocery outlets and 26 pharmacies in our census. Bellandur and Electronic City have about one physical grocery store per dark store. West Bangalore is the opposite: Vijayanagar and Rajajinagar have only 3 mapped dark stores each, but 24 and 20 grocery outlets. That is where neighbourhood formats still face the least delivery overlap.

What should grocery and convenience brands do now?

• Defend before you add. Q3 closures clustered where three or more apps overlap, so test basket size and repeat rate in HSR, Bellandur and Whitefield before signing another unit there.
• Look west and north. Vijayanagar, Rajajinagar and Basaveshwar Nagar have deep grocery demand and thin dark store cover.
• Sell what an app cannot. Fresh produce, dairy, meat and pharmacy counsel bring walk-ins; KPN Fresh, Akshayakalpa and Licious are among the city's larger chains on that basis.
• Stay near transit. 278 of the 1,000 grocery outlets with a metro distance in our data sit within 1 km of a station.

Should property owners lease to a dark store or a grocery brand?

It depends on the unit. Dark stores want 2,500 to 4,000 sq ft with loading access, often on a side road or first floor, and QuickCommerceMap's July 2026 report puts typical Bengaluru dark store rents at Rs 1.2 lakh to Rs 2.2 lakh a month for that size. Their risk is churn: platforms re-tile zones every quarter. A grocery, supermarket or pharmacy brand usually wants ground-floor frontage on a residential main road and stays longer.
